About Cheri Van Duyne
Humanity rises above the utility of life through artistic expression. As we invest ourselves in a work of art, we find that we are drawn above everyday life into a world that has an intense and unique significance of its own…. yet we know it. It is the supernatural.
The monotype print is true to the printed quality of all major printmaking processes. Yet, the monoprint is a single work of art, not multiples. Monoprinting has its own unique identity due to the overlapping of colors and hues. Color changes when the image is transferred from a glass surface to paper in the printing process. The luminosity and transparency of the printed color and the unpredictable imagery the printing press contributes can be likened only to stained glass… it has a unique quality of its own.
Many people believe that art is simply personal taste. Yet in actuality there are seven elements when put together form a work of art. These elements are line, form, color, texture, symmetry, balance, and aesthetic beauty. If all of these properties are not met, the work fails. When a piece of art meets all of the fundamental criteria, the piece is a successful work of art. I believe that all of my work is fundamentally sound.
I have a Master’s Degree in Visual Art. I create pieces using traditional printmaking techniques. My working style is abstract expression because this style affords me freedoms I cannot find in other styles. Of the possible modes of printmaking I am primarily a monoprinter because of its spontaneity.
Reason, imagination and color are my basic tools. Working with color, I strive to make the art work alive, a creation that will have life and movement of its own.
How is it that you became an artist?
The creativity of art is what captured my interest. I went into a master’s program to continue my education in art and their discovered print making. It is the perfect medium for me. It offers great freedom of expression. You are only limited by your imagination. I find Abstract Expression very free and a most exciting style for creativity. The monotype print has an inventive and unpredictable imagery due to the overlapping of colors and hues and the changes that take place when the ink is transferred from a glass surface to paper. It can be astounding! And it is a very exciting experience to be a part of.
What prompts you to create your art work?
The art work comes from an excitement for life. Everything in our world is composed of colors and microscopic shapes that fill us with wonder. By working with these shapes and colors dynamic art work is born.
Describe the process in creating a monoprint?
In printing you place the inks on glass then place the inked glass on the paper to print. Usually, the first print is just the beginning. From that printing, more images can be created on glass and printed on top of the first image until your work is totally complete. Some of my pieces have been printed on as many as fifty times for the final art work. That is why the monoprint is like a painting. It cannot be duplicated. It is one of a kind. The work resembles oil painting or watercolor with a natural painterly feeling, yet it has its own characteristic look. The luminosity and transparency of the printed color is unlike any painted surface. The beauty is indescribable.
What is a favorite art work that you have done and why?
It would be hard to say which artwork was the most favored, yet, "The Color of Sound" is still a favorite. As I mentioned earlier, some of the prints have many layers of printing to arrive at the finished art work. "Color of Sound " is one of those pieces. It was printed on at least fifty times before it was finished. And when the printer asked me what the title of the piece was, the title came instantly. It had so many brilliant, beautiful colors all acting together that it seemed to me that you could hear the colors. So, the art work named itself!
